Sansevieria Coppertone is also known colloquially as the Snake Plant due to its scaly, snake-like nature. It is native to Africa and can grow up to 4 feet tall. It has long snake-like leaves with color variations resembling scales. The leaves are dark green with light green and yellowish patterns and ruffled up. This plant is sometimes called the “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue” and is relatively easy to care for. The fact that it is so easy to care for makes this plant a great contender for any first-time plant parents.
This plant can be grown indoors or outdoors. If you choose to grow it outdoors, be mindful of the roots because they can spread out vastly, very similar to bamboo. This plant does best in a contained pot environment since it will spread easily when planted in the ground.
Sansevieria is also effective at removing toxins from the air in your home.
This is a pretty slow-growing plant. Its growth frequency completely depends on the environmental factors it is exposed to, and it will easily adapt to any environment it is given. Water
Since Sansevieria Coppertone is considered a succulent, it does not require much water. This is one of the many reasons why this plant is so easy to care for and often a new plant care-takers first project. During the warmth of the summer and spring months, you only need to water it once a week. During the winter months, it could be even less than this. Water it just enough during the winter to prevent it from completely drying out. Normally this will be around 1 time every two to three weeks.
Try to avoid watering in the center of this plant because you risk water being held by the rosette. We want to avoid having stagnant water in the plant because it could lead to fungal or disease growth. Also, try and avoid overwatering for the same reasons.
Soil
Sansevieria Coppertone plants need to be in loose and well-draining soil. When potting this plant, do not pack it in too tightly, or the roots will not have room to breathe and expand. It is recommended to use a cactus or succulent potting mix where there is an emphasis on how well the soil can drain. If you are using regular soil, consider adding perlite or peat moss to the mix to increase the drainage capabilities of the soil. The pH of the soil should be around 7. You can test the pH of your soil with pH test strips that you can easily order online or buy at a gardening store. Try to avoid having wet soggy soil at all costs since this plant will not tolerate it. Wet soil could lead to root rot, disease, pest infestation, fungus growth, and overall death of your beloved plant.
Sunlight
Sansevieria Coppertone is native to areas with lots of sunlight. This being said, ensure that your Sansevieria is getting plenty of sunlight. This plant can tolerate partial and full sun. It can tolerate direct and indirect sunlight. However, if you notice burn marks on the leaves, consider moving them out of the direct sun and into indirect sunlight. When this plant is well established, it can also tolerate low light. If it is left in low light for too long, you will risk the leaves curling in on themselves.
Humidity
This plant evolved to tolerate a variety of extreme environmental conditions, including drought. Therefore, Sansevieria Coppertone can tolerate a wide variety of humidity levels. This plant’s versatility makes it a great plant for anyone just learning how to care for plants or for someone without a lot of time to care for their plants. It can tolerate anything from low humidity levels too high humidity levels so do not worry too much about how much humidity it is getting.
Temperature
The ideal temperature for this plant is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are comfortable in a warm room, your Sansevieria Coppertone will most likely be comfortable. Sansevieria Coppertone is pretty tolerant of most temperature conditions. That being said, they will not tolerate frost. Therefore, if you experience harsh winters where you live, keep your plant safe and healthy by moving it indoors and away from windows during the winter.
Fertilizer
Sansevieria Coppertone is a pretty slow-growing plant. The growth rate depends on the environmental conditions and the amount of nutrients it receives. Suppose you would like to increase the nutrients your Sansevieria Coppertone receives to promote growth. You can consider adding fertilizer to your plant. Only consider adding fertilizer when your plant is in its growing period during the warmth of the spring and summer months. Adding fertilizer during the dormant winter months will serve no purpose to the plant. It is recommended to use slow-release fertilizer to not overwhelm the plant. You will want to use a high-quality fertilizer to avoid creating a wacky pH in your plant base with the excess salinity from the fertilizer.
Potting and Repotting
Since Sansevieria Coppertone expands through its roots, it needs a large space to fill. Essentially it will fill any space it is given. That said, if you want a bigger plant, give it a bigger pot to fill. Consider using a deep, large pot with drainage holes. Using too small of a pot will inhibit growth and create unhealthy-looking leaves. Any time you repot this plant, get a pot about twice the size of the previous so that your plant has room to grow and expand to its new space. Just make sure that those drainage holes are large and functional.
Sansevieria Kirkii Pulchra Coppertone
Sansevieria Kirkii Pulchra Coppertone is a rare variety of Sansevieria Coppertone. It has elonged leaves with waves on the edges. They have a copper hue about them that will captivate almost anyone. As the leaves mature, they grow darker and darker green. The most remarkable feature of this plant is the reddish lining along the side of the leaves. Sansevieria Kirkii Pulchra Coppertone will leave you wondering if this is a plant or if it is art deserving to be placed in a gallery.
Sansevieria Coppertone Flower
If you are lucky and take good care of your Sansevieria Coppertone, it may present you with its most beautiful gift of all: a flower. The flowers from this plant are particularly remarkable because they are not like the typical flowers we are used to. It grows a long stem and then, at the end of the stem, produces a flower with many long cylindrical nodes that take the place of petals. It looks as though this flower may have come from another planet! The flowers are greenish-white in color and have a lovely floral scent. You can expect your Sansevieria Coppertone to flower in the spring and summer. The flowering of this plant is highly variable on the conditions it is being cared for under, so make sure you follow this guide to help your plant flourish.
Sansevieria Coppertone Propagation
You have a few options to consider if you want to propagate your Sansevieria Coppertone. We recommend propagating this slow-growing plant from either leaf cuttings or the “pups” that grow from the root bulbs.
Propagating your Sansevieria Coppertone by leaf cuttings is probably the cleanest and hassle-free way of creating new plants. Take your sterilized scissors and cut off a few mature leaves. Once the leaves are free, please place them in water covering up the bottom quarter of the leaf. Place the cup in some filtered sunlight, and you are good to go. Keep refilling the container with water as the plant consumes the water. You can expect roots to develop on the leaf at around week 5. However, it could take up to 7 weeks before you fully notice roots. Once you notice the roots, remove the plant from the cup and plant it in some soil.
The other method of propagating a Sansevieria Coppertone that is relatively easy is by using the smaller plants, or “pups”, that grow from the bottom of the plant. Just cut them off with sterilized scissors from the root bulb and place them in their pot so that they have room to grow. While your plant is getting established in its new home, ensure it has plenty of water and indirect sunlight to promote growth.
Keep in mind that Sansevieria Coppertone is a slow-growing plant. When propagating this plant, it is an excellent time to practice patience while watching the plant grow over time.
